What Is BookTok? How TikTok Rebuilt the Bestseller List

BookTok has turned backlist novels into million-sellers and made romantasy the biggest genre in publishing. Here's how it works and what it's pushing in 2026.

The short version

BookTok is the book-recommendation corner of TikTok. Its distinguishing feature is that it sells: a video with a few hundred thousand views can put a five-year-old paperback back onto bestseller lists, and publishers now acquire and market with that possibility in mind.

Why it works when book marketing usually does not

  • Emotion over plot. The pitch is how a book made someone feel, not what happens in it.
  • Legible hooks. "Enemies to lovers, dragons, magic school" communicates faster than a blurb.
  • Backlist-friendly. The algorithm does not care about publication date, so older books get second lives.
  • Trust. A person with a shelf behind them reads as a friend, not an advert.

What BookTok is pushing in 2026

Romantasy still leads, but the centre of gravity is shifting. Readers who came in through Fourth Wing and ACOTAR are moving in two directions: toward epic fantasy and science fiction — Red Rising, The Will of the Many, Sanderson — and toward more literary romance. Meanwhile horror is the fastest riser, particularly weird fiction, historical horror and femgore.

The catch

BookTok is very good at making you want a book and very bad at helping you keep track of the forty you have already been told to read. The recommendations arrive faster than anyone reads, which is how a 400-book TBR happens in eighteen months.

Capturing a title the moment you see it — and being able to find it again by mood, length or genre when you are actually ready to read — is the missing half of the loop.
