Netflix Is Adapting Jhumpa Lahiri's Unaccustomed Earth — Read the Book First

Netflix just revealed its Unaccustomed Earth series starring Freida Pinto, premiering 17 December. Here's why Jhumpa Lahiri's 2008 story collection is worth reading before it lands.

Netflix released first-look images this week of Unaccustomed Earth, its eight-episode series based on Jhumpa Lahiri's 2008 short-story collection, starring Freida Pinto and Siddharth. It premieres on 17 December — which is, conveniently, almost exactly the amount of time you need to read the book first at a civilised pace.

The book

Unaccustomed Earth is eight linked-feeling but standalone stories about Bengali-American families, mostly set around Cambridge, Massachusetts — grown children negotiating ageing parents, arranged and chosen marriages, grief handled quietly. It debuted at number one on the New York Times bestseller list and won the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award. Lahiri is a Pulitzer winner, and a lot of her readers consider this collection her best work.

The adaptation has a twist

Showrunner Madhuri Shekar has done something unusual: she imagined that the characters from across the separate stories all know each other — one community around one Thanksgiving table, rather than eight disconnected worlds. Readers of the book get the extra pleasure of spotting which story each character walked in from.

Why read it first

• The interiority is the point. Lahiri's power is in what her characters don't say. Television can film a silence, but it can't narrate one.
• Short stories are low-commitment. Eight stories, one sitting each. This is the easiest "read it before the adaptation" you'll ever get.
• December is twelve weeks away. One story a fortnight and you finish with time to spare.
