How Many Books Should I Read a Year? An Honest Answer

The average adult reads around 12 books a year. Here's how to pick a reading goal you'll actually hit, and why the number matters less than the schedule.

The short answer

Take the number of books you read last year and add 20%. That is your goal. Everything below is why.

Why 52 ruins more reading years than it saves

A book a week is a seductive target because it is tidy, not because it fits anyone's life. It works out at roughly 45 minutes of reading every single day, with no allowance for a 800-page doorstopper, a bad week, or a book you bounce off at page 200. Most people who set it are behind by March and have quietly stopped by June.

Do the arithmetic instead

  1. Average novel: about 90,000 words.
  2. Average adult reading speed: roughly 240 words per minute.
  3. That is about 6 hours 15 minutes per book.
  4. 20 minutes a day = about 122 hours a year = roughly 19 books.

Twenty minutes a day is genuinely achievable. A book a week is not, for most people, and the gap between those two facts is where reading goals go to die.

Count time, not titles

A title count quietly punishes you for reading long or difficult books — the exact books most worth reading. If you are drawn to epic fantasy or dense non-fiction, set a minutes or pages goal instead and the incentive stops fighting your taste.

Set the floor, not the ceiling

"At least ten pages a day" outperforms "50 books this year" because it tells you what to do tonight. Goals that specify an action beat goals that specify an outcome.

Whatever number you land on, the useful thing is seeing your own pace rather than guessing at it — how long you actually take per book, which months you read most, and how far ahead or behind you really are.
