AI Book Recommendations: Do They Actually Work in 2026?
We tested AI book recommendation tools — including ChatGPT, Shelfies' Gemini-powered AI, and Goodreads' algorithm. Here's what actually works.
What we tested
We fed five readers' shelves into ChatGPT, Claude, Goodreads' "Recommendations", StoryGraph's mood search, and Shelfies' Gemini-powered recommender. Each had to produce three picks.
The results
- Goodreads: Stale. Recommended bestsellers the reader had already finished.
- ChatGPT: Strong picks but hallucinated 1 in 10 titles.
- Claude: Excellent picks but no shelf integration.
- StoryGraph: Great for mood, weak for "what's next?".
- Shelfies: Best fit-to-shelf recommendations because the AI has context on every book you've finished, rated, and DNF'd.
